What is Control Plan?
In 30 seconds
A control plan is the document that defines how product and process characteristics are controlled: what is measured, by which method, how often, and what to do if there is a deviation. It can be prepared for prototype, pre-launch and production phases.
How does it work?
- Risks and special characteristics from the FMEA are carried into the control plan.
- For each characteristic, the measurement method, sampling and reaction plan are set.
- After a complaint or nonconformity, escape causes are fed back into the control plan.
Often confused with
Control plan and instructions
The control plan summarises what is controlled; work and inspection instructions detail how.
Common mistakes
- Updating the control plan without linking it to the FMEA.
- Filling the reaction plan column with generic statements.
From a QWorks perspective
Control Plan is part of the QWorks platform vision; the aim is for updates coming from escape causes to be traceable.
