What is QMS?
Quality Management System
In 30 seconds
A quality management system is the set of policies, processes, responsibilities and records an organisation uses to plan, assure, control and improve the quality of its products and services. The most widely used reference framework is ISO 9001.
How does it work?
- A quality policy and objectives are set; processes, responsibilities and their interactions are defined.
- Processes are run, measured and recorded, then evaluated through internal audit and management review.
- Nonconformities are handled through corrective action and the system is continually improved.
Often confused with
A QMS is not quality software
A QMS is a management system; the software that holds documents and records is one of its tools. Having the software does not mean the system is working.
Common mistakes
- Treating the system as an archive of procedures and forms, leaving day-to-day execution to personal follow-up.
- Confusing preparation for a certification audit with the system itself.
From a QWorks perspective
QWorks does not replace a QMS; it runs the day-to-day execution of quality processes (work, owner, deadline, evidence) alongside your existing systems of record.
