Audit method
What is VDA 6.3?
Process audit
In 30 seconds
VDA 6.3 is the process audit method published by the German automotive industry association VDA. It assesses the product creation process by scoring a question catalogue; many OEMs require it from their suppliers.
How does it work?
- It covers process elements from potential analysis and project management through product and process development to series production and customer support.
- Questions are scored on evidence and the result is summarised in a rating.
- An action plan and follow-up are expected for findings.
Often confused with
VDA 6.3 and system audit
VDA 6.3 is a process audit; a quality management system audit (e.g. ISO 9001 or IATF 16949) checks the system against requirements.
Common mistakes
- Filling the question catalogue like a checklist without showing evidence.
- Leaving finding actions untracked after the audit.
From a QWorks perspective
This relates to QWorks Audit, which is being developed to support owned, time-bound follow-up of actions arising from VDA 6.3 findings.
