What is SCAR?
Supplier Corrective Action Request
In 30 seconds
A SCAR (Supplier Corrective Action Request) asks a supplier for root cause analysis and corrective action on a supplier-caused nonconformity. The supplier’s response is often expected in 8D format.
How does it work?
- The nonconformity and its evidence are sent to the supplier; containment and response deadlines are set.
- The supplier submits the root cause and action plan; the customer reviews it.
- The request is closed once the actions’ effectiveness is verified.
Often confused with
SCAR and internal corrective action
Same discipline, different owner: in a SCAR the supplier owns the action and the customer owns the follow-up.
Common mistakes
- Sending the request by e-mail and not tracking its deadline.
- Accepting the supplier’s response without effectiveness evidence.
From a QWorks perspective
In QWorks the corrective action request for a supplier-caused problem is tracked in the same case context; the Supplier Quality module is part of the platform vision.
